Drama has always been taught in the Department of English and Literary Studies since the establishment of the Faculty in 1964; it was regarded and treated as one of the major genres of literature together with Prose and Poetry. The Department of Theatre and Performing Arts is, therefore, a product and an offshoot of this early practice in Bayero University, Kano. The Theatre and Filmic experience of Kano State in particular and Nigeria in general is integrated and connected with the need, the philosophy, the objective and the eventual establishment of this Department in March, 2014 with the appointment of Muhammed O. Bhadmus as its foundation head. In 2012, Professor Abubakar A. Rasheed, who was the Vice Chancellor of the University set up a three man committee with Professor M. D. Suleiman, the then immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Arts as its Chairman, Professor Sa’idu B. Ahmed, the then Dean of the Faculty of Arts as member and Muhammed. O. Bhadmus of the Department of English and Literary Studies/Dean of Student Affairs as member/secretary. The committee was charged with putting together the document for the formation of the department. It was the document put together by this committee that was later taken to ADC and Senate for consideration. The Senate of Bayero University, Kano initially approved the establishment of the Department of Theatre and Film Studies and a B.A degree programme in Theatre and Film Studies. On the instruction of N.U.C, however, the name of the department was changed to Theatre and Performing Arts for the award of a B.A degree in Theatre and Performing Arts. Its first set of students was admitted in the 2013/2014 academic session. In 2015/2016 academic session, the Department of Theatre and Performing Arts was relocated along with the Department of Mass Communication and a new Department of Information and Media Studies, with a proposed Department of Film Studies, to form the new Faculty of Communication.
